When Should You Worry About Constant Headaches?

Headaches are quite common among everyone. Not drinking enough water, feeling stressed , poor sleeping pattern or missing out meals can all be a cause of headaches. But if it keeps occurring often or feeling different than usual? then it may be time to pay closer attention.

Here is how to know when a headache needs more than a basic pain tablet.

1. Headaches Are Happening More Often Than Before

A headache occurring every now and then is not a big deal. But if your headaches begins occurring frequently , especially if this is something new, it is best to check with a doctor.

Frequent headaches can be attributed to migraines, tension headaches or even something that requires medical attention.

2. The Pain is Different or in a New Location

If your headache pain gets suddenly more intense, or travels to another location, such as behind your eyes or at the back of your head, do not ignore it. A sudden headache that is more intense than you could ever remember could indicate some serious condition such as bleeding in the brain – you need to get medical help immediately.

3. You See Other Odd Symptoms

You may see unusual symptoms with your headache sometimes.  Look for:

  • Blurry or double vision
  •  Difficulty speaking or thinking clearly
  •  Feeling off balance or wobbly
  •  Fever or stiff neck
  •  Nausea or vomiting not associated with a migraine
  •  Weakness or numbness on one side of your body

These could be warning signs of something wrong with your nerves, an infection in your brain, or a stroke.

4. You Have Other Health Issues that Compound the Risk

If you have had a previous head injury or have health problems such as cancer, HIV, or weakness in your body’s defenses, be extra careful. Also, a headache that seems new or different from your normal headaches should be checked by a doctor if you fall into a high-risk category.

5. You Are Taking Too Many Pain Tablets

If you are taking pain tablets often, you might be making things worse. Headaches caused by using too many tablets are called rebound headaches. If you are using medicine many times a week, it may be time to look for a better long-term solution. You may only be covering the problem, not fixing it.

When to See a Doctor

Not every headache is serious, but how often it happens and what other signs come with it matter. A simple rule to follow is this:

If your headaches disturb your daily life, keep you from sleeping, or do not get better with usual treatment, get medical help.

Most headaches are not a serious condition. But if something isn’t right, don’t ignore it. Knowing when it is serious and when to seek help can help a lot. Don’t wait. Knowing when to get help early can make a large difference.
